font-size: 14pt;\">The blockchain explosion is affecting many sectors, not least of which is the law. \u00a0Already, this technology is affecting not only the practice of law, but the law itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Practice of Law<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">One of the major legal practices affected by blockchain is contracts. \u00a0Programmable blockchains are capable of creating \u201csmart contracts\u201d &#8211; contracts that either execute themselves or can be programmed to take into account outside variables. \u00a0For example, we could use blockchain to program a contract where Acme sells Customer 1000 widgets for $1000 to ship in one week. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The blockchain could implement a provision that Customer receives a 1% discount if the shipment is late. \u00a0The blockchain could also use an \u201coracle\u201d, or a tool for incorporating outside information, to base the cost of the widgets on the price of steel. \u00a0See<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isda.org\/a\/6EKDE\/smart-contracts-and-distributed-ledger-a-legal-perspective.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cISDA\/Linklaters Smart Contracts and Distributed Ledger \u2013 A Legal Perspective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d for more information<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, intellectual property practice is incorporating blockchain to manage asset life cycles. \u00a0Artists can use blockchain to sell access to media files directly to their consumers, tracking not only who should be able to use the assets, but who should get paid for their use. \u00a0See \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.factmag.com\/2017\/02\/21\/blockchain-bitcoin-music-industry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How the technology behind Bitcoin could change the music industry \u2013 and help everyone get paid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Legal Blockchain<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">In the US, states are starting to pass laws to legalize blockchain. \u00a0For example Arizona passed a law that says:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">A signature that is secured through blockchain technology is considered to be in electronic form and to be an electronic signature &#8230; A record or contract that is secured through blockchain technology is considered to be in an electronic form and to be an electronic record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Note that Arizona also passed a law that forbid using blockchains to track gun ownership.) \u00a0Other states, including Vermont and Delaware, also have blockchain laws on the books. \u00a0See \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/arizona-governor-signs-blockchain-bill-law\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona Governor Signs Blockchain Bill Into Law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, states don\u2019t create brand-new laws for each situation, but will often adopt model laws. \u00a0In July, the Uniform Law Commission passed a \u201cModel Uniform Law\u201d for using blockchain for digital currencies. \u00a0See \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/uniform-law-commission-given-states-clear-path-approach-bitcoin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Uniform Law Commission Has Given States a Clear Path to Approach Bitcoin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Law Libraries<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This site has been collecting many ideas for using blockchain in libraries. \u00a0For law libraries, there is a further possibility &#8211; authenticating primary sources. \u00a0Right now, the federal government and some states authenticate primary law documents (e.g. statutes, case law, and regulations) by creating special files. \u00a0However, it\u2019s not always possible to tell if the authenticated file is the most recent version of the law. \u00a0Blockchains could be used to designate a specific location where the most recent and authentic versions live.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>What\u2019s Next<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are just at the beginning of seeing some of the possible changes that blockchain will bring to the legal field. \u00a0Some states, like Illinois, are exploring ways to put real estate titles on the blockchain, which could change the law of real property (note some countries have already started this process). \u00a0See the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illinoisblockchain.tech\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illinois Blockchain Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Some lawyers are exploring ways to put wills into a blockchain. \u00a0This would help ensure a person\u2019s last wishes were not only well-defined, but self-executing. \u00a0For example, a blockchain will could automatically execute a provision such as \u201cJane Doe will receive $10,000 upon graduating college.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;
