While contacting libraries that use Blockchain to look for a demo, I came across this one.\u00a0 It is headquartered in Santiago, Chile.\u00a0 There are branches in other countries, and the English version of the acronym is ECLAC, which is the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.\u00a0 In spite of the events in Chile at this writing, the site is still working.<\/p>\n

Their collection of databases<\/a> is remarkable because the majority of them are open source.\u00a0 You can browse without a login.<\/p>\n

The only caveat is to read slowly and carefully.\u00a0 I was impressed by the International Disaster Database<\/a>, but I had trouble finding it again.\u00a0 First I looked under “D.”\u00a0 Then, I looked under “I.”\u00a0 Neither letter worked.\u00a0 I went backwards, looking at the database and where it might be.\u00a0 It’s under “E.”\u00a0 The official name is EM-DAT (Emergency Events Database).\u00a0 “The International Disaster Database” is a subheading. It is a product of CRED (Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters) in Belgium.<\/p>\n

The databases are in English, Spanish or multilingual.\u00a0 Many of them are where you might expect to find them.\u00a0 As you scroll down, be sure to stop at “O” for open access text books, theses and dissertations.\u00a0 The last stop is “W,” where there is information on world health and world trade.<\/p>\n
