{"id":44308,"date":"2019-11-04T02:54:40","date_gmt":"2019-11-04T02:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ischoolblogs.sjsu.edu\/blockchains\/?p=44308"},"modified":"2024-03-04T13:16:59","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T21:16:59","slug":"causes-and-effects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ischoolblogs.sjsu.edu\/blockchains\/causes-and-effects\/","title":{"rendered":"Causes and Effects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A number of issues have been bouncing around in my head lately:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can you really have a sovereign identity on someone else&#8217;s network?<\/li>\n<li>Sovereign identity might mean &#8220;Your identity is your problem.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Blockchain might be oversold, but for the wrong reasons.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computer.org\/csdl\/magazine\/ic\/2018\/02\/mic2018020023\/13rRUB6SpQs\">Blockchain: the Emperor&#8217;s New PKI<\/a> looks at this.\u00a0 Amazon was oversold back when it was a book catalog, but no one predicted that it would help revolutionize the supply chain and later help define cloud services.\u00a0 Blockchain&#8217;s known potential is for better contracts and building networks, but it might make its biggest impact somewhere else.<\/li>\n<li>How much autonomy do libraries have to act?\u00a0 In one class, it was mentioned that even library directors are equivalent to middle managers.\u00a0 Very few libraries stand alone without attachments to other institutions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>How far would a willingness to act take libraries?\u00a0 Since 1978, libraries have waited for the political winds to change, waited for MARC to be replaced and are now waiting for a Blockchain based replacement for OCLC.\u00a0 I have not heard of libraries lobbying or moving ahead on linked data.\u00a0 There is a Blockchain based network of libraries in Chile.<\/li>\n<li>Blockchain is praised as a tool for building new networks, but it can also be used to reinforce old ones.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>So far, are Blockchain networks better than what they might replace?\u00a0 For example, is Bitcoin better than other payment systems?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There will be more&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A number of issues have been bouncing around in my head lately: Can you really have a sovereign identity on someone else&#8217;s network?
