Blog Post 2-281: Global Tech
UN Women hosted a forum on global innovation, technology and entrepreneurship industry to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of UN State members. In other words, nations have agreed that in order to achieve equality we need equal gender participation in key industries. This achievement requires “transformative shifts, integrated approaches and new solutions” (“Media Advisory”, 2017). Information professionals are already hosting these type of events and benefit from listening to these free public panel discussions. Gathering a current understanding of strategies and solutions.
UN Women is a branch of an Intergovernmental Organization (IGO) that uses its platform to promote equality “to accelerate progress and to remove the barriers” (“Media Advisory”, 2017). Through partnerships and participation in forums librarians can be the catalysts to this type of SDG. Such as leading a technology literacy program or reaching out in our networks to promote entrepreneurship and innovation. During this forum a speaker mentioned a common saying “lift up as we climb”. It is our responsibility as information professionals to lift up our communities, including female colleagues, as we climb to positions of authority and influence.
