Blog Report #3

The Latinx Punk community is based on the foundations of speaking out against hatred and protecting their community members. To do so, they seek out different forms of information and practice different information behaviors. One of the information seeking behaviors they practice is Everyday Life Information Seeking. Reijo Savolainen, who created the model, states, “ELIS studies discuss the ways in which people use various information sources to meet information needs in areas such as health, consumption, and leisure” (Savolainen, 2018, 1506).

The Latinx Punk community does this in numerous ways. One information need they seek is choosing different forms of leisure. According to Jenna Hartel, “The concept of having choice underlies the notion of leisure, which is pleasurable in part because it is what we want to do” (Hartel, 229). The author explores this concept by concentrating and researching people with hobbies. One group Hartel focuses on in her study is people who cook as a hobby. Within her findings, she was able to gain insight on different forms of leisure and how they branch off into two different categories. Hartel was able to explore and explain the differences between casual and serious leisure. The Latinx Punk community practices serious leisure when it comes to attending punk shows. Many like to attend to casually leisure since they are only there for entertainment. There, community members get to choose which band they want to see. Community members can choose a band based on their political stances, whether or not they like how they play, or if they are friends with the members. Community members can go beyond casual leisure and practice serious leisure. They can start new ammature punk bands, volunteer to organize shows, or they can continue to participate as a hobby. They are able to seek this information in many ways such as fliers, online blogs, or word of mouth.

Another information need the Latinx Punk community seeks is daily survival. According to Innocent Ekoja, “They would also require information for daily survival, such as information on where to get access to health care delivery, foods and drinks, clothing, spiritual needs, etc” (Ekoja, 2131). Ekoja explores this concept by researching information needs of groups in developing regions. She does this by focusing on different communities in underdeveloped parts of the world. The Latinx Punk community practices daily survival in many ways. The community is built on the concept of speaking out about injustices that are going on in the world and how community members can be affected. At punk shows, they perform songs and give community members an opportunity to respond in front of everyone. They hold an open conversation that anyone is welcomed to join. These bands give members the opportunity to share new information that can benefit the community such as knowing what their rights are as citizens or immigrants (Sorrondeguy, 2010). They are able to seek out daily survival information by attending punk shows, speaking to other community members, creating zines with information, or participating in activism.

    Hi Ahtziry,

I know this has been said before but this is a very fascinating information community to read about. I personally am a big fan of counter -culture groups/movements and it seems like Lantinx Punk culture is indeed one of those groups. I liked how you articulated the needs of your information community it was really insight to learn about a community I did not know about before. Thank you for sharing!
